Hot Sauce Onion Rings

Well said Barbs, I too like the simple things – like this recipe (tenuous link anyone?) This recipe uses just three ingredients, an onion, bottle of Frank’s and flour, if you don’t have these three things in your kitchen – it’s time for some serious soul searching. Ok, ok, you need some oil for frying… Most recipes with so few ingredients are fairly simple but this one is ridiculously easy, just cut your onions then douse with hot sauce, coat in flour and fry. Leaving the onions in the hot sauce for 20 minutes allows them to both suck up some of the spicy tangy goodness and also become softer making for an onion ring that you can cook in 30 seconds. Another tip to get even better onion rings, is not to worry about the excess hot sauce when flouring – this starts to build up in the flour and you get little pockets of Frank’s that clings to the onion making it extra crispy!! These aren’t your standard soggy heavy onion rings covered in batter – the hot sauce/flour combo gives a tempura like batter that is light and delicious. So what are you waiting for? As the great scholar Streisand also once said “Life’s too short. Start with dessert Frank’s Onion Rings.”
Just add flour
Slice the red onions 1/4 inch thick
Don’t worry if your rings have a ‘skin’ on them after separating – this just adds an extra surface to crisp up when frying!
Easy recipe’s have easy measurements – Dump the whole bottle over your rings and leave for 20 minutes (we don’t waste hot sauce around here! Strain the left over sauce and it’s good as new!)
Flour the onion rings and drop (carefully) into hot oil
Fry at 190C for 30 seconds – if you don’t have a thermometer then put a chopstick in the oil – if it bubbles up straight away you are good to go
Once fried, drain your rings on kitchen roll and then serve immediately
I love this recipe for the gnarly bits of hot sauce that get stuck in the flour as you start coating the rings – these catch to the rings and crisp up giving little hot sauce explosions as you eat!
Crispy light onion rings in a tempura style batter – laced with Frank’s RedHot Buffalo Wings Sauce
Frank's Hot Sauce Onion Rings Recipe
- 1 Large Red Onion
- 354ml Frank's Red Hot Wings Sauce (large bottle)
- 200g Plain Flour
- 500ml Vegetable/Sunflower Oil
- Remove the top of the onion and peel, then slice into 1/4 inch thick rings
- Put into a container and cover with the hot sauce. Mix so all rings are covered and leave for 20 minutes (stir occasionally if all the onion isn't submerged)
- Put the flour in a bowl or plate and season
- Heat the oil to 190C in a heavy based pan or wok (if you don't have a thermometer you can tell the oil is hot enough by putting a wooden chopstick in the oil. If it bubbles straight away you are good to go)
- Remove the rings from the hot sauce in small groups and coat in flour
- Dust off the excess and add to the oil
- Add the rings in batches and heat until golden brown - about 30 seconds
- Remove from oil and place on kitchen roll to drain
- Serve immediately
